Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

Established in 1972, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences or USU is the only federal medical school and graduate school of nursing. It also offers graduate degrees, both PhDs and MAs, in subjects like public health, military medical history, and comparative medicine. Students include both active military service members and civilians, who will go on to serve in branches of the military including the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, both in the United States and abroad. Theres an active athletics department, and the team mascot, the Fighting Docs, includes students, faculty, and staff!

    Founded in the 1970s under a sponsorship in the legislature by Rep. F. Edward Hebert of Louisiana, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences prepares its students for service in the medical corps of the U.S. military branches. It is a federal postgraduate university that includes a school of medicine, nursing, and dentistry. Students are both civilians and active military service memebers.
  • What should I expect at the Commencement ceremony?

    The ceremony includes traditions from that are both academic and from the military. The USU Color Guard carries symbols of the school and the United States, and the U.S. Marine Band plays throughout the ceremony. Graduates from the medical school take an oath of office. Graduating service members wear a cap and gown rather than their uniforms.
