History of the FDA
The Food and Drug Administration has been in operation as an arm of the federal government since 1848, but it got its name in 1930. Its first function was to analyze the chemical composition of agricultural products to protect consumers. Over generations, its duties have expanded and changed because the world has changed. Today, the FDA inspects the safety of drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, biological and radioactive products, and food.
